Park Shelters

Shawnee Parks & Recreation has 25 park shelters at 14 different city parks. Shawnee parks are popular for baby and bridal showers, birthday parties and family gatherings. Shelters can be reserved in person, Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Drive. A proof of residency (drivers license or utility bill) is required for the resident rate. Shelters cannot be reserved until payment is received. Cancellations to a park shelter reservation must be made in writing, 30 business days before the rental date in order to receive a refund. Refunds are not made due to weather. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the hours?
Park hours are 6:00am - 10:00pm per SMC 12.121.010. Shelter rentals are 8:00am-2:00pm; 3:00pm-9:00pm or 8:00am-9:00pm
Does the park have restrooms?
Access to restrooms is available during park hours. Park restrooms are open from mid-April through the end of October, depending on freezing temperatures. Portable toilets are available when the restrooms are winterized. 
Does the shelter have electricity?
Erfurt and Wilder Bluff Park have electricity available. A maximum of 20 amps for the entire shelter. If too many items are plugged in and the breaker is tripped, issue will not be resolved until the next business day. 
Does the shelter have lights?
Shelter lights turn on automatically via photocell
Can we play music?
Amplified music or sound is allowed in the shelter area only.
Can we decorate?
Twine or zip ties may be used to hang decorations. Nails, staples, screws, cellophane, Command hooks, or any other adhesive material are prohibited. All decorations and hanging materials must be removed at end of rental. 
What are our cleaning responsibilities?
Following your event, please make sure your shelter is clean and cleared of trash on the tables and ground. Please remove all decorations. Staff will empty the trash in receptacles. Trash that does not fit in receptacles must be removed by the renter. 
Does my rental include the playground or other amenities?
Rental of shelters include shelter area only. All park amenities remain open to general public.
Can I bring an inflatable?
If renters bring amusement features (bounce houses, inflatables, etc) renters are responsible for all liability and must have proper certificate of insurance. All features must be weighted down with sandbags. Ground staking is not permitted.
Can we have a food truck?
Food trucks are only allowed during shelter rental permit times. In addition, the food truck must possess current City of Shawnee Food Truck operating permit per SMC 5.26.030 and vend only to members of permitted function and not the general public

Shelter Rules & Regulations

  • Vehicles must remain in parking lot areas and are not allowed access within the parks.
  • Building of fires shall be restricted to privately owned ovens, grills, stoves or the fireplaces located in the Erfurt Park Pavilion or Wilder Bluff Pavilion (with proper permit). Patrons must provide their own wood. All fires must be completely extinguished before leaving the area. The Parks and Recreation Director, or Fire Chief, or that person’s designee, may prohibit building of fires by the posting of signs.
  • Shelters not reserved are available on a first come, first served basis. Renters must have their permit with them at the time of rental.
  • Shelter rentals are rain or shine. No refunds will be given.
  • Rental groups are responsible for cleanup of shelter area.
  • Alcohol is only allowed by permit (additional fee required) at the Erfurt Park Pavilion and Wilder Bluff Pavilion.
  • A $200 damage deposit is required for rental of Erfurt Park Pavilion and Wilder Bluff Pavilion. If damage exceeds $200 additional charges may be incurred. 
  • Failure to follow rental rules and regulations may result in permit revocation, loss of deposit, and/or ability to rent in the future.
