In an effort to protect lives and property and reduce burn injuries, fireworks are prohibited within the City of Shawnee as outlined in Chapter 56 of the 2012 International Fire Code.

The 2012 International Fire Code was adopted by City ordinance. Section 5601.1.3 of the International Fire Code prohibits the possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks.

The definition of fireworks in the 2012 International Fire Code does not include the use of caps or snakes. However, it does include sparklers. All fireworks are prohibited within the City of Shawnee with the exception of snakes and caps. The use of sky lanterns are also strictly prohibited within the City of Shawnee.

Violating the International Fire Code by using fireworks may result in a fine up to $500.00 and/or six months in jail. It also may result in the remainder of the fireworks being confiscated.
