Changes to Animal Control Procedures

Due to a reduced amount of space available at local animal shelters, the Shawnee Police Department has made some minor changes to the city's stray animal protocol.

The city will continue to pick up stray and lost dogs, but if an animal control officer is not on duty, the reporting citizen may be asked if they can keep the dog until an animal control officer is on duty.

Officers will continue to practice the policy of not removing cats from any residential property unless the cat is ill, injured or has bitten a person. To assist with locating the owner of a domestic animal that has wondered from their home, animal control officers are requesting pet owners ensure their pet(s) have some type of owner identification which could include a tag, phone number on the collar, or electronic chip.

Questions in regards to the changes may be directed to our animal control officers at 913-631-2155. We have also include a list of additional area animal welfare resources below.
