Tidy Town

Tidy Town Update: On Monday, October 12, 2020, the City Council approved Ordinance 3340 amending Chapter 8.16 of the Shawnee Municipal Code related to Solid Waste and the Tidy Town Program. The Ordinance, effective immediately, modifies the curbside bulky item pick up portion of the program. For 2020 and future Tidy Town events, residents will call and schedule their curbside bulky item pick up once per calendar year with their residential trash hauler. Residents should expect communication annually from their haulers on pick up procedures. The same five item criteria will apply to this change.

As you all know, we are being faced with an unprecedented situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. It has forced us to make several big changes to our City functions, meetings, events and more. We have been working closely with the trash haulers in Shawnee to figure out how to handle the upcoming Tidy Town event. As always, we must make health and safety the utmost priority. Please know this was not an easy decision and we have to consider several factors.

Waste Management, WCA, Republic and KC Disposal have agreed on the following changes.

  • Residents are able to schedule a bulky item pickup for their household directly with their trash hauler, pending employee safety and staffing availability. PLEASE BE SURE TO MENTION THAT YOU ARE WANTING TO SCHEDULE YOUR TIDY TOWN PICKUP WHEN YOU CALL!
  • Residents will schedule this appointment directly with their trash hauler to work out a time that is convenient for the customer. All of the guidelines about what will, and will not be accepted curbside still apply.
  • Bulk service must be scheduled between now and December 1, 2020 and completed by December 31, 2020. No carry over into 2021 will be allowed. Your trash hauler can answer specific questions regarding items as well.
  • Waste Management: (913) 631-3300
    • Waste Management has specific information for customers posted here and they plan to send out postcards to customers as well.
    • The following guidelines apply to Waste Management customers only. If you live;
      • East of 435 and South of Shawnee Mission Parkway: Call now through July 24 for July pickup.
      • Any address West of 435: Call now through August 21 for August pickup.
      • East of 435 and North of Shawnee Mission Parkway: Call now through September 25 for September pickup.
  • Republic (A-1/Superior): (913) 279-6033
  • Town and Country/WCA: (816) 380-5595
  • KC Disposal: (816) 388-9739
  • There will be no drop-off site available. The drop-off site requires a high level of coordination between City staff and trash haulers. It is something we all start planning for several months in advance. At this time, we cannot set a date in the future with the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic impacting staffing, safety and other day-to-day activities.
  • We would encourage people to visit or to contact one of our local nonprofit organizations to look for ways to offload some of their items in an environmentally friendly way.

We understand these changes impact you all directly and these are not decisions we take lightly. Again, the safety of our community is our top priority. If you have questions, please contact your trash hauler directly or the City of Shawnee at (913) 742-6204. We thank all of you who are showing us patience and understanding.
