Shawnee Names New Police Chief

Deputy Chief Sam Larson Promoted to Chief of Police

City Manager Nolan Sunderman has announced the appointment of Deputy Chief of Police Sam Larson as Shawnee's new Chief of Police. A nationwide search was conducted following Chief of Police Rob Moser’s retirement announcement. Larson’s promotion will be effective February 24, 2020.

Sam Larson joined the Shawnee Police Department in 1999. He has served as a Patrol Officer, Traffic Safety Officer, STAR Team Officer, and Detective while an Officer in the Department. In 2005, Sam achieved the rank of Sergeant. He served as a Sergeant in Patrol, General Assignment Investigations, and in Dispatch/Technical Services. In 2014, Sam was promoted to Captain. Another promotion followed in 2015, to the rank of Major and he was assigned to the Patrol Division and then Support Services Division. In 2019, Larson was named Deputy Chief.

During my tenure, the Department will continue to strive for the highest standards of accountability, professionalism, effectiveness, all while serving our community with purpose and care.”

According to City Manager Nolan Sunderman "Sam is well-prepared to take the reins of the Police Department. He has a passion for local government and over 21 years of law enforcement experience. Sam has been a successful, engaged leader for Shawnee, not only in the Department, but also in the community. I look forward to working with Sam in his new role as a key member of the City's leadership team."

Chief Larson graduated from Washburn University with an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice. He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas and is a 2017 graduate of the Shawnee Tomorrow Leadership Program. Larson is a 2019 graduate of the 277th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. Larson is a past President of the Kiwanis Club of Shawnee and is a current member of the Rotary Club of Shawnee. Larson is a lifelong resident of Shawnee. He and his wife Nichi have two daughters, Madison and Loren.
