General Information: Parks and Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for maintenance of City parks, Civic Centre, Shawnee Town 1929, Cemeteries, and the two City Aquatic Centers. The Parks and Recreation Department also issues pool passes, park permits, schedules recreational activities, and makes reservations for social events being held at the Civic Centre.

Civic Centre - The Shawnee Civic Centre was completed in November 1991, offers a variety of opportunities for residents within the 24,000 square foot facility. The Centre is comprised of a regulation size gymnasium, aerobics area, meeting rooms, full service kitchen, and the Parks and Recreation Department Offices. Residents, nonresidents, and businesses have found the Civic Centre a good place to hold parties, wedding receptions, reunions, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, business meetings, sport tournaments, seminars and classes.

Parks & Recreation Advisory Board - Consists of nine representatives from the four Wards in Shawnee, along with the Parks & Recreation Director and Deputy Parks & Recreation Director. The Advisory Board members serve three year staggered terms.

Members advise the Mayor and City Council in planning, maintenance, development and operation of all recreation areas and facilities. Each member of the Governing Body (Mayor and City Council) appoints a representative from their Ward. Meetings are open to the public and held on the first Thursday each month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall in Council Chambers.
